Editing Lesson Blog

Today I learned multiple things. First, I learned how to properly check out a camera as well as any other equipment my group and I may need to use for this project. I learned what I must do to sign the piece(s) out and when and how to return it/them. Secondly, I learned what dumping is and how it  is supposed to be done. From the lesson I learned that dumping is the transferring of footage from the camera onto the computer. After, I learned about some of the essential steps in the doting process. The program used on the computers is Pinnacle Studios, one of the most efficient programs. I learned that in the program, the titles, footage, and sound will all have their own layer. For this project my group and I will be using one of our group member’s MacBook and for the editing program we will be using iMovie. Even though, the information I learned today was valuable Incase something goes wrong with our plan to edit on our own device.

The first step that must be done is dumping. First off, you open the computer and look for Pinnacle Studios. After you’ve done that you must open a new folder. Then, you’ll put the SD card into the computer and look for the footage in DCIM. The footage will be based on the date and time. If the footage cannot be found you must click on private, then AVCHD, next folder, then stream and you should be able to find the footage. Next you’ll highlight the files you want to import and put them in your folder. Finally, you can open Pinnacle Studios and import the footage from the folder you created into the program. That concludes the process of dumping.

Once you’ve dumped your footage into the computer and onto Pinnacle Studios, it will be time to edit the footage. Everything prior to when you begin to edit is your raw footage. To begin editing, you must click “edit.” The editing in this program is similar to many other programs, it is layered; these layers are called tracks. The first AV track is for titles, the second AV track is for the footage, and the third is for any sound that will be in your film. For the first track, you can insert a title by clicking the “T.” Write the title of which you please and then insert it into track one. For the second track if you wish to split the footage you simply click the razor blade icon on the section of the footage that you wish to split. To cut, you select the footage you do not want and simply delete it. For the last track, if you wish to detach audio you can select the clip in raw footage, right click and select detach audio. One of the last things I learned today was how to export your film when you are done with it. Making sure it’s mpeg.4, you would hit export and wait for it to fully export. When doing this, it is also important to make sure that it is the full size of the film because that will ensure that it has the best possible quality it can have.
