Editing Blog

Today in class we were undergoing the process of editing. When we all walked into class, we sat down and Ms. Cats informed us that there was an issue. The computers were all shut, and our editing program, Pinnacle Studios, was down. What did that mean for us? Well, unfortunately that meant that we could not begin to edit the footage we recorded during the filming process. Since we could not edit today on the computers in the classroom, we have to wait until they are back up and running again. They should be up by next class, and then we will be able to start the process of editing all of our footage. Since we could not start the process, the first thing I had to do was dump all of our footage onto the computer. The reason I did this was because we had to put all of our footage onto an SD card to make sure none of it got lost and we could go back and start editing when the computers were back up and running. After I dumped all of our footage and before we took the SD card out of the computer, my group and I reviewed some of our scenes.

The first scene we reviewed was the one with the Nike Air Force Ones. We saw that we had to go back and actually re-film the scene because it did not turn out the way we wanted it to. Since the computers were down, we had the opportunity to use the free time it re-film scenes that needed to be re-filmed and film scenes we had not gotten to film the previous class. During this, I was in charge of the camera work for the Nike Slides scene. Before I began to film, I made sure the setting was all clear to film. I made sure the lighting was good and that nothing or no one was in the background interrupting the shoot. As the director of the scene, I instructed the actors on how to position themselves in the scene before I filmed. When I pressed record, I filmed the scene. I involved tilts and I zoomed in and out on the actor and the apparel she was wearing to put emphasis on the brand of our commercial. I had to film the scene about seven times before I got one I was satisfied with that I thought we be perfect for the commercial. Each take, I realized something that I would do different the next take. Because of these realizations, I was able to fix the mistakes I was making each time I recorded to get the perfect take.

Once my group and I got back from recording the scenes we had not finished the class before, we headed back to class. When we got back, we realized that one of our group members had brought her laptop. This was perfect because considering the computers were down in the classroom, we could uno our footage onto her laptop and begin the digging process. We had little time, however, to edit because once we got back there was not much time left in the class. I inserted the camera into the laptop and I dumped the footage onto her laptop. The program we will be using on her laptop will be iMovie. When I dumped the footage, my group and I reviewed the takes that were the best and that we wanted to use in the commercial. We didn’t get much further than that for the siting process today due to the unfortunate circumstances of the computers today in class. Our computers our old and we experience technical difficulties like this frequently. Thankfully, someone in my group has their own laptop. So, incase a situation like this happens again, Jada my group member will have her laptop with her so that our progress will not be delayed.

Filming Blog

Today my group and I filmed every scene part of our commercial. In total we had six scenes to film. Out of those six scenes, I was in charge of the camera to film two of the scenes. Before I began to film, I acted as the director of each scene. I made sure the actors were in position and that the camera was on. I checked  the lighting and looked around at the setting to make sure everything was intact. Once I turned the camera on, I got everyone ready and then I pressed the recording button. At first the camera was not working. When I pressed the recording button it would not start recording. Eventually, after a few presses, it finally started.

The scenes that I filmed were the Nike slides scene and the Nike Air Force Ones scene. Both were outside on the senior patio. For the first scene, I had the actor, Jada, sit on one of the tables with her feet facing outward to show the Nike symbol. I pressed record and we began to film the scene. I started out with the camera zoomed in on the slides. Then, I slowly zoomed out and created a tilt and moved from her feet to the top of her body. After that, I did another tilt but this time it was a quick one, from the top of her body back down to her feet. Aside from zooming in on the symbol on the slides, I also zoomed in on the symbol on her jacket, seeing as it was also Nike. I made sure to include these tilt movements and slow zooming in and out to really demonstrate the message of the commercial. These tactics also help to emphasize the brand itself.

This scene took many times to film. We took about seven takes of it. When I reviewed each scene that I had previously recorded, I saw that there were plenty of things I could do differently with the camera to make it better each time. After the first take, I realized that I made the tilt movements to fast. The second and third take showed me that I had to make the zooming in and out more slow because a quick zoom in and out would not put emphasis on the brand logos. After a few of the takes I also realized that the scene would be more interactive if I added another person into it. I made another actor go into the scene along with the initial actor and play the role of someone having a conversation withy he actor wearing the brand. I decided that this conversation in the commercial would make the scene more appealing and interesting to the audience. The last thing I noted to revise while filming was starting and stopping the camera recording at the right times. I learned that I shouldn’t start too soon, because the actors my not be ready, and I shouldn’t stop it too late, because there will be unnecessary footage.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today I learned multiple things. First, I learned how to properly check out a camera as well as any other equipment my group and I may need to use for this project. I learned what I must do to sign the piece(s) out and when and how to return it/them. Secondly, I learned what dumping is and how it  is supposed to be done. From the lesson I learned that dumping is the transferring of footage from the camera onto the computer. After, I learned about some of the essential steps in the doting process. The program used on the computers is Pinnacle Studios, one of the most efficient programs. I learned that in the program, the titles, footage, and sound will all have their own layer. For this project my group and I will be using one of our group member’s MacBook and for the editing program we will be using iMovie. Even though, the information I learned today was valuable Incase something goes wrong with our plan to edit on our own device.

The first step that must be done is dumping. First off, you open the computer and look for Pinnacle Studios. After you’ve done that you must open a new folder. Then, you’ll put the SD card into the computer and look for the footage in DCIM. The footage will be based on the date and time. If the footage cannot be found you must click on private, then AVCHD, next folder, then stream and you should be able to find the footage. Next you’ll highlight the files you want to import and put them in your folder. Finally, you can open Pinnacle Studios and import the footage from the folder you created into the program. That concludes the process of dumping.

Once you’ve dumped your footage into the computer and onto Pinnacle Studios, it will be time to edit the footage. Everything prior to when you begin to edit is your raw footage. To begin editing, you must click “edit.” The editing in this program is similar to many other programs, it is layered; these layers are called tracks. The first AV track is for titles, the second AV track is for the footage, and the third is for any sound that will be in your film. For the first track, you can insert a title by clicking the “T.” Write the title of which you please and then insert it into track one. For the second track if you wish to split the footage you simply click the razor blade icon on the section of the footage that you wish to split. To cut, you select the footage you do not want and simply delete it. For the last track, if you wish to detach audio you can select the clip in raw footage, right click and select detach audio. One of the last things I learned today was how to export your film when you are done with it. Making sure it’s mpeg.4, you would hit export and wait for it to fully export. When doing this, it is also important to make sure that it is the full size of the film because that will ensure that it has the best possible quality it can have.

Planning Blog: Script, Costumes, Props, Schedule

My group and I plan on doing a Nike commercial. The plot of our commercial is that there is a Nike shoe for everything. Our script will have few words, and the dialogue will most likely be all voice overs. The purpose of the script will be to describe the shoe and how it pertains to a specific person or action. As we show each shoe a new action will be taking place to show how Nike has a variety. Majority of the commercial will consist of background music rather than dialogue. The idea is that each scene will show off the shoes, then at the end we will include dialogue to give our message and to show the connections of each scene and to tie the commercial together.

As far as the costumes and props we will be using in the commercial go, there will be multiple types of Nike shoes and outfits to go along with them as well as props to go along with each scene. We will have an athletic scene in which the actor will be wearing an athletic outfit along with Nike running shoes. A prop for that scene would possibly be a water bottle and/or an athletic bag. Another scene would consist of a teenager wearing a casual pair of Nike shoes with a casual school outfit, along with a prop such as a book bag. The purpose of these particular costumes and props are to portray our message. Since our message is that Nike has shoes for everything, each costume will depict the different varieties.

We plan on having different schedules for the different stages of the filming process. The first on our schedule is developing our story and getting through the pre-production process. During the pre-production process, we will formulate our script, create our storyboard, and secure our actors and locations.  Next on our schedule is to film and record all things needed in the commercial. This will include the footage and voice overs. After this we will edit all footage, recordings, and special effects. During this part of the schedule we will review all footage, and should there be anything we need to reshoot, we will do so. Our schedule will be broken down into the stages of filming process so that we can efficiently complete the tasks in a timely manner during each class period.

Planning Blog: Conventions/Codes

In a Nike commercial there are certain codes and conventions. When you think of a Nike commercial, what comes to mind? Sports, athletes, apparel, and some sort of hydration. Each of these factors are usually used in making a Nike commercial, and that’s what makes them codes and conventions.

Usually in a Nike commercial you will see an action through the form of a sport: running, hiking, basketball, dance, football, etc. They use this in all of their commercials to target their audience and stick to their brand. Nike is a sports apparel brand, so using sports in their commercials is essential. They always have apparel in their commercials because that is their product. The easiest way to accentuate their apparel is by using athletes to show it off. That is why athletes are most commonly modeling the apparel in their commercials. Generally you will see a famous athlete as the model for the apparel so that they can do their sport in the sportswear apparel. This is also used as an appeal to authority towards the audience (if they see a famous and respected athlete wearing the brand they are more likely to buy the product).

Something that is not as common, but still an aspect of Nike commercials is a form hydration used by the athlete or model. Usually you will see someone drinking water or Gatorade, before or after the sport in the commercial. This is usually done as an addition to the idea of sports taking place. If an athlete were to be tired after a game they will usually take a sip of a refreshing and hydrating drink. So it just adds another element to the commercial and the story/concept.

Introductory

Hello, my name is Jahzenyah. The main way to describe me is passionate, loving, and outgoing. I am very passionate about my hobbies, the people I love, and improving and becoming a better person every day. While I tend to love others very much, I also have an overflowing amount of self love. I'm very quirky and usually keep a positive mindset, call me optimistic if you will. All in all, I have the personality of a very strong and loving young woman.

As far as my likes and dislikes, I have many. I would have to say that music is one of my biggest likes. I am very passionate about it and it practically consumes me. Without music, I would not be who I am. Social media is another like I have because it's something I enjoy to spend my time on.
I love meeting new people because I never know who I'm going to end up loving and/or form an amazing friendship with. Furthermore, a few of my dislikes include racial injustice, people who are constantly negative, and seafood.

All my years in school so far I have taken higher level classes. Throughout middle school I took Honors courses, and now, in high school, I am taking AP and AICE level classes. I really enjoy the classes that I take because they are challenging and I know I am benefiting from them. One class I particularly enjoy is this class, Media Studies, because I am being introduced to so many aspects of the film process and industry that I never knew about before.
